A book comprised of vacation photos taken with a (then unknowingly) broken 35mm camera. The full 171-page book can be downloaded here.
On August 3rd, 2014 I departed San Francisco International Airport for a 21 day trip across Europe equipped with only a 35mm camera given to me by my grandfather. I hadn’t used it, I hadn’t tested it, and I certainly hadn’t anticipated the results... and just like that, 3 weeks of irreplaceable photographs developed into 3 weeks of damaged negatives. Apparently the shutter leaf malfunctioned, overexposing and contaminating nearly every single frame with a dark, burnt streak; a SHADE.
But shade cannot exist without light. While these are not quite the vacation photos I had anticipated, the images in this book demonstrate the intrinsic qualities of film that make it so perfectly imperfect; grain, color shift, light leaks, the results of faulty mechanics and, of course, human error.
At least that’s what I’m going with.
